This course will include much of the regular English II curriculum. We will survey various literary genres: short stories, tragedies, epic poetry, novels, poetry, drama. The enhanced aspects of the course will focus on the study of myth, folk and fairy tales (Greek, Roman and European) and on the advanced interpretation of literature. We will also tackle Shakespearean comedy, for a change. A study of the archetypal hero and quest will include excerpts from The Odyssey, Beowulf, The Once and Future King, and Idylls of the King. In addition to weekly vocabulary lessons and grammar review and study, we will learn, practice, and develop advanced composition structure and style. Some of the works studied in Honors English II will include Brave New World, Dr. Faustus, Les Miserables, Brighton Rock, The Alchemist, Antigone, and The Hobbit.
