Chargers Culminate Independent Studies Program with Impressive Presentations

by Jessica Leite '22

The Heritage Hall Upper School Independent Studies Program (ISP) is an intensive, yearlong endeavor that provides self-motivated and intellectually curious juniors and seniors an opportunity to pursue a topic of interest outside the traditional core curriculum. Last week, the 2021 class of participants – seniors Gannon Allen, Owen Fleming, Macey Fletcher, Lily Plaster, Gary Smith, Caple Spence, and Alli Williams – showcased their research and findings with compelling presentations during the School’s 10th annual ISP Banquet.

Faced with challenges in the early stages of their work due to the continuing effects of COVID-19, these scholars persevered, masterfully completing a formal paper, project, and presentation on topics ranging from fashion to medicine to the Bushido code. Their faculty advisors and the ISP committee guided them through the process.

The culminating banquet presentations displayed the magic that comes when diverse passions are encouraged to flourish. Each scholar captivated the audience with their understanding of complex topics and skills.

Commenting on his participation in the program, Smith stated, “I jumped at the opportunity to study big data and data science with dedicated purpose under the guidance of my mentor, Mrs. Ami Steelman. It was a truly transformative experience for me.”

As ISP Director Katie Horn Davis '09 noted, “Each student’s willingness to pursue excellence in their unique passions instills hope for a promising next generation of leaders and innovators.”
