Heritage Hall Special Events

Computer Applications for Credit: Virtual

Luke ’93 and Ami Steelman • June 1-July 30
Location: (virtual) Google Classroom
Cost: $500
Grade(s): 9-12

Students will be encouraged to construct their own learning about a variety of computer-related technologies. The course emphasizes word processing, data organization, creativity, collaboration, and presentation skills. Students will be challenged to think critically about digital citizenship and online safety. A small sampling of the content in other tech electives will be included. Course satisfies the technology requirement for graduation. Current students need to utilize their school-issued laptops; new-to-Heritage Hall students (with signed contract on file in Admissions) will be issued a Macbook prior to the first day of class.

At their own pace, location, and schedule, students will watch provided videos and complete digital assignments and virtual check-ins. The entire course will cover approximately 45 hours of instruction and classwork – an amount consistent with regular school year semester courses. Teachers will provide a suggested timeline for a student to complete all coursework, but will allow students to complete those tasks faster or slower than suggested, provided everything is turned in before the final deadline of July 31. A Google Classroom will be established for the inflow and outflow of assignments and instruction. Parents will be strongly encouraged to participate in Classroom as guardians, which will provide automated email summaries and allow them to view their child’s progress through the assignments.

Academic Benefits:
  • Earns the required technology credit for graduation
  • Prepares students for use of the laptops in regular Upper School classes and gives them a sampling of what is offered in other tech electives
  • Gives students more schedule flexibility to pursue other electives during school year (especially helpful to arts, debate, and AP/Honors students)
