New Steel Drum Band Captivates Audiences with Vibrant Sound

by Gary Smith

This school year, Heritage Hall Performing Arts added 16 steel drums to its instrumental music program’s ensemble of instruments. Instantly recognizable, the steel pan’s distinctive sound is known for its full and shimmering tones; island, reggae, and even pop music genres have featured the instrument for its fun and relaxing qualities. Instrumental Music teacher John Champney was excited about introducing the steel pans into his classroom.

“My students are very enthusiastic about rock music with its punchy guitars and drums. I looked to harmonize the unique sound of the steel pans with the rock music they already loved. The result has been an inventive, upbeat mixture of sounds,” Champney explained.

Because the steel pan is a rather fun and simple instrument to play, Champney hopes it will bring more people into the music room to learn how to read notes on a page and play this unique instrument with confidence and rhythm.

Regarding her experience with the drums, junior Amelia Stewart, who plays the cello pan, stated, “Not many people get to play this remarkable instrument. I feel extremely fortunate to have this amazing opportunity.”

As special as it is to play the instrument, it’s even more special to hear it in person. The steel drum band’s phenomenal adaptations of festive tunes in their winter concert performance brought warmth and harmony to a cold evening. The band aims to inspire and warm many more hearts with its spring performances.
