An active member of the Boy Scouts of America since 2012, Heritage Hall sophomore and Junior Assistant Scoutmaster Will Shons recently attained the rank of Eagle Scout, the program’s highest achievement.

Among the requirements to obtain an Eagle rank, candidates must demonstrate leadership through successfully planning, developing, and executing a service project. Seeking an opportunity that would benefit both animals and humans, Shons chose to lead an effort to revamp the outdoor area behind the Central Oklahoma Humane Society’s Neonatal Care Center. The renovation included cleanup and debris removal, ground and soil prep, tree planting, and the installation of a water system. The newly designed space provides the organization a venue for hosting fundraisers and other outdoor events.

“I viewed the pursuit of Eagle rank as a difficult challenge, but part of scouting’s purpose is to help prepare young men for the challenges of life. For example, while the lower ranks of Boy Scouts require youth to master different skills that are mostly suited for outdoor activities, the higher ranks require an adept knowledge of leadership-based skills and a deep understanding of how to lead. To receive this honor means that I have earned the required 21 merit badges and mastered the requisite life skills throughout my career. Obtaining Eagle is about more than the ranking; it’s about growing and developing … it’s about the journey,” remarked Shons.

Scout Leader Sean Hamilton said of Shons, “In my experience working with youth as a soccer and tee ball coach for five years and now as a scout leader for nearly five years, I have seldom come across a young man like  Will. His attitude and work ethic are second-to-none. He is always there for his fellow scouts, ready to lend a hand or tell a good story. Will takes on assigned tasks with vigor and an attention to detail. His integrity is beyond reproach. Will is an asset to his troop and a great representation of what it means to be an Eagle.”
