College Counseling

The goal of the College Counseling office at Heritage Hall is to partner with students and their families to find the right college “fit.” With two college counselors assigned to a class of approximately 90 seniors, our students are fortunate to benefit from a small counselor to student ratio of approximately 1:45. (According to the National Association of College Admission Counselors’ most recent report, the national average is approximately 482 students per counselor). Our counselors also visit college campuses and take part in professional organizations to establish valuable contacts and stay aware of the latest trends in this ever-changing field.

Meeting with students in both individual and group settings, we discuss many college options based on certain criteria and help the students narrow down their college lists. We offer help completing applications and writing essays. Using a college counseling software system, students can sign up for meetings? with college representatives who visit Heritage Hall, request transcripts and teacher recommendations, and inform us when they have applied to their schools.

Parents are given the opportunity to participate in special morning coffees and evening workshops to discuss such topics as financial aid, the application timeline, and standardized testing. We also offer a panel discussion where they can learn from the most recent “experts”- parents of graduating seniors. By working together with students and their families, we are able to assure that our students will begin the next chapter of their lives knowing that they have found that right fit for them.

YEAR-AT-A-GLANCE

List of 4 items.

  • Freshman Year

Freshman year, we encourage students to fully embrace their new high school experience, working hard in classes and exploring various activities and leadership opportunities. We remind Freshmen that their transcript GPA begins with this year and to work closely with their advisors to select appropriately challenging courses going forward. Second semester, freshman take the Pre-ACT for practice, and parents are invited to attend the Freshman-Sophomore college night for a preview of the college counseling process at Heritage Hall. Our doors are always open for questions.
  • Sophomore Year

In addition to maintaining a strong GPA, sophomore year is a time to continue to develop extra-curricular interests both in and out of school. Each sophomore is assigned a college counselor, and we encourage students and parents to reach out as questions arise. Sophomores take the PSAT in the fall and the Pre-ACT in the spring for practice, and parents are invited to attend the Freshman-Sophomore college night. Sophomore year is not too soon for some students to make a few college visits.
  • Junior Year

Junior year is the time most students begin the college search process in earnest. To begin to get a sense of a good college fit, juniors complete our College Questionnaire, make visits to colleges, and meet with college representatives who come to Heritage Hall. Parents attend the Junior College Night in the fall, and counselors meet individually with students and parents throughout the year to develop a possible college list, discuss a standardized testing strategy, and plan a challenging senior course schedule. Juniors take the PSAT in the fall and the ACT and/or SAT, usually beginning second semester. Also, prospective college athletes register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. In August, the college counselors offer an optional College Kickstart class for students who want to complete much of their application and essay work before the beginning of their senior year.
  • Senior Year

Senior year, college counselors work individually with seniors on all aspects of their college applications from beginning to submission. From teacher recommendations, to essays, to deadlines, to scholarships, we provide guidance throughout the process. A senior night for parents at the beginning of the year offers an opportunity for questions and reassurances, and a Financial Aid Night helps families navigate the FAFSA and addresses college cost strategies. Finally, we celebrate with seniors as their acceptances arrive, assist them with their final college selections, and remind them to work diligently right through to graduation.

“When we toured the school, I was impressed with the interaction of the students and small class size. Finally, the 100% college acceptance rate of the senior class impressed me greatly.”
